With a population of nearly 900,00 people, Charlotte NC is the county seat of Mecklenburg County. It’s ranked as the nation’s 25th largest city in America. It’s also the second-largest banking center in the United States. The Charlotte Douglas International Airport is located with the city limits.

Matthews, North Carolina
Matthews is nicknamed “Stumptown” due to numerous tree stumps left after residents cleared the way for cotton farms. The construction of a railroad line leading though town also left a number of stumps.
The Weaver Bennett and Bland office is located in the oldest commercial building in town. It has a listing on the National Register of Historic Places.
Matthews is home to over 27,000 people. It’s the headquarters of the Harris Teeter grocery store chain and Pokertek, an international gaming device manufacturer. Matthews also hosts the satellite campus of Wingate University.
Harrisburg, North Carolina
Harrisburg, NC is bordered to the north by Concord, NC and to the west by Charlotte. With a population of over 17,000 people, Harrisburg has achieved rapid growth of 18% since 2010. Harrisburg is in Cabarrus County, adjacent to Mecklenburg County, and is part of the Charlotte – Gastonia – Concord statistical area.
Concord, North Carolina
With a population of nearly 97,000 people, Concord, NC is the county seat of Cabarrus County. Concord is located 20 miles to the northeast of uptown Charlotte. It includes area attractions such as Concord Mills Mall and NASCAR’s Charlotte Motor Speedway.
The city evolved as a textile manufacturing center with numerous nearby cotton mills in the 1900’s. Today it is a diverse business hub including these major employers:

Reed Gold Mine, one of the country’s first gold mines, remains today as a historic tourist destination.
Gastonia, North Carolina
Located in Gaston County, and adjacent to Mecklenburg County, Gastonia is the second largest city in our region. With a population of over 77,000 people, the city is a historic center for textile manufacturing. It was also the site of the Loray Mill Strike of 1929, which became a key event in the labor movement.
While manufacturing remains important to the local economy, the city also has developed healthcare, education, and government sectors. Gaston County Courthouse is a historic courthouse building located at Gastonia, listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
Close by bedroom communities, such as Belmont and Mount Holly, provide easy access to and from Gaston and Mecklenburg Counties.
Monroe, North Carolina
Located directly east of Mecklenburg County, Union County is home to Monroe, NC. With a population of 33,000, Monroe has a rich history. During the civil right movement of the 1960s Monroe was an epicenter of racial conflict. It also serves as the home for members of the Freedom Riders. As county seat, Monroe is also the location of the Union County Courthouse.
Davidson , North Carolina
Home to Davidson College in northern Mecklenburg County, Davidson, NC has a population of over 11,000. Davidson is 22 miles from Charlotte and is a popular neighborhood for commuters connected via Interstate 77. Davidson is notable for receiving numerous quality of life awards and distinctions, including:

Huntersville, North Carolina
Growth defines Huntersville, growing over 24% between 2010 and 2019 with a population of over 58,000. Located in northern Mecklenburg County, and just 14 miles from uptown Charlotte via Interstate 77, the town is home to:
- Joe Gibbs Racing owner of four predominant NASCAR Cup Series teams
- Rockwell Tools North American Distribution Center
Ballantyne, North Carolina
Founded in 1992, Ballantyne, NC is a prominent neighborhood located in southern Charlotte, leading down to edge of the state border. With a population of over 25,000, this community is home to Ballantyne Corporate Park. This 535-acre business park includes the headquarters for:

Rock Hill, South Carolina
Just south of Charlotte, the city in York County, Rock Hill, SC is home to over 117,000 people. Rock Hill was the setting for two important civil rights events in the 1960s.
One was a sit-in at a segregated McCrory’s lunch counter, which is now known as the Five and Dine. The other event was the first deep south stop of the Freedom Riders, which resulted in beatings by a white mob. These events fostered national awareness of the local conditions.
The city is also known for The Four Civitas statues on Dave Lyle Boulevard. These represent “Gears of Industry,” “Flames of Knowledge,” “Stars of Inspiration,” and “Bolts of Energy.”
Rock Hill is also well-known for its education offerings, such as Winthrop University, Clinton College, and York Technical College.
